Why I find it difficult to think of extra dimensions

I think that the concept of extra dimensions is intriguing, but at the same time, I’ve got a problem with it. If there were more than three dimensions, wouldn’t we be able to at least see some evidence? I mean, in this enormous world, we should see plenty of evidence of things “shifting” in and out of a higher dimension, just like seeing in two dimensions would make three dimensional objects literally appear and/or disappear. Or is the fourth dimensions actually something different, an exotic condition, which can come about via our own beliefs?
