Extremely painful situation, but why?

Why is dying of cold like the most painful experience that a human can possibly endure?! Not doing it, just wondering "why?" Of all pains that I've had, has included acne, getting cut, burned, bitten by a dog, scraped after being fallen off my bike onto a sidewalk, etc. the cold has always been the most painful!
